Network Engineer
Job Description
SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology, the Network Engineer is responsible for assisting in the configuration, deployment, and maintenance of networking equipment (routers, switches, hubs, firewalls, etc). The network engineer will serve as Tiers 2 & 3 troubleshooting support of network-related infrastructure. This position requires the employee to be on-site; it is not remote.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Network Engineer's responsibilities will include general network-related troubleshooting, Network switch management (Cisco), Network Firewall management, Wi-Fi/wireless support, deployment, and configuration, DHCP and DNS management, and Network Firewall management.
Additional responsibilities will include regular on-call support.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Troubleshoot and provide Tier 2 & 3 technical operational support to internal and external customers as assigned. This will include troubleshooting and resolving connectivity issues (wireless & wired) with desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, IOT devices, and other specialty equipment.
- Collaboration and coordination with other technical staff members, internal business stakeholders, and end-users related to the support of technical infrastructure and network connectivity.
- Collaboration and coordination with 3rd party partners, vendors, and service providers related to the support of technical infrastructure and connectivity.
- Participation and management of regular maintenance windows to include software installations, firmware upgrades, and other update configurations in support of industry best practices and vendor-supported solutions.
- Virtual Network Management and administration (VMware ESX/ESXi, VLANs, Azure, etc.)
- Wi-Fi Access Point configuration, deployment, and central management
- Network Routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, etc) configurations.
- Coordinate and perform activities related to developing, implementing, and supporting the technical infrastructure needed for cross-functional departmental projects including software deployments, hardware deployments, and other technical vendor integrations.
- Project planning, testing, and life-cycle management of network-related hardware, software, and firmware.
- Creation and maintenance of network maps and diagrams
- Data Center, MDF, & IDF hardware support and management
- Cable management
- DNS & DHCP Management
- Provide instruction and mentoring to other team members as appropriate.
- Provide analysis, recommendations, and technical assistance to business units and schools within the University to support technical projects.
- Assist with support of other platforms, environments, and projects supported by the IT department as needed.
- Monitor and test for potential performance bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with team members and/or appropriate 3rd parties to implement those fixes.
- Proactively ensure the highest levels of network and infrastructure availability.
- Manage and monitor all network related infrastructure.
- Maintain security, configuration backups, and redundancy strategies.
- On-call support required.
- Perform any other duties or tasks as requested.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May be asked to directly manage other technical staff in the absence of leadership. Carries out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s (2-year) degree in computer science or related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a professional information technology environment with a history of progressive responsibilities.
- Strong network management and troubleshooting skills.
- Network virtualization knowledge and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5-7 years of experience in a professional information technology environment with progressive responsibilities.
- 2-3 years managing Cisco Network Devices
- CCNA, CCNP, or other Networking Specific Certificates.
- Healthcare environment experience
- VMware and other virtualization experience
- Windows server management experience
- Active Directory management experience
- VOIP and telecommunication knowledge and experience
- VPN tunnel management experience
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervisory and general management abilities. Knowledge of departmental functions and organization for medical practice. Skill in composition, compiling, and preparing a variety of correspondence, reports, and other materials. Develop and maintain smooth and constructive relationships with colleagues within the Practice, University, Veteran’s Administration, and medical community as well as outside agencies, organizations, and individuals.
