Medical Laboratory Technician
Job Description
SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the MLT is responsible for computer entry of laboratory orders, and performance of laboratory tests in the areas of allergy, celiac, chemistry, endocrinology, hematology, microbiology, molecular biology, urine chemistry and serology. The applicant must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a knowledge and experience in performance of CLIA waived, moderate, and high-complexity laboratory procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Perform computer entry of laboratory orders and test results.
- Collect and prepare specimens for analysis.
- Operate, calibrate and maintain various clinical laboratory instruments.
- Follow written procedures to perform waived, moderate and high-complexity laboratory tests in a variety of lab specialties.
- Conduct established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents and media; evaluating results of quality and implement corrective action as needed.
- Confirm and verify laboratory results through knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments.
- Establish and monitor quality assurance/continuous improvement programs.
- Establish and monitor safety programs in compliance with laboratory regulations.
- Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Utilize laboratory information systems to accurately and effectively report patient results.
- Write laboratory procedures conforming to standardized format.
- Remain current in laboratory knowledge and skills.
EDUCATION / LICENSURE REQUIRED :
- Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Current State of Tennessee License as Medical Laboratory Technician - General
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 1 year of lab experience required. The ideal candidate needs to be able to work as part of a team and must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must possess excellent pipetting skills (single and multi-channel). Ability to organize workflow and coordinate with other team members. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with facility members, students, residents, staff, patients and other third parties. Ability to operate computer, keyboard and printer.
