Dietician-Nutritionist/Oncology

Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, the Oncology Nutritionist is responsible for providing nutritional counseling and education to cancer patients during and after treatment.  The Oncology Nutritionist also works with patients' families and healthcare providers to develop personalized and evidence-based nutrition plans to optimize health outcomes.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individualized and evidence-based nutrition assessments and interventions for patients with cancer.
  • Develop and implement personalized nutrition plans to meet the unique needs of each patient.
  • Educate patients, families, and healthcare providers on the importance of nutrition in cancer treatment and recovery.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate patients' progress and adjust nutrition plans as needed.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate care and ensure optimal health outcomes.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest research and developments in oncology nutrition and share with patients and colleagues.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the practices and principles of Nutrition.  Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with faculty members, students, residents, staff, patients, and other third parties. Ability to operate computer, keyboard, and printer.  Ability to concentrate under high demands and listen effectively.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Prior experience working as a dietitian within an oncology setting.  Advanced certification in oncology nutrition (such as Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition).  Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, dietetics, or related field. Familarity with electronic medical record systems a plus.  Experience in patient education and public speaking.  Strong problem solving skills and the ability to adapt nutrition plans based on patient needs.  Participation in relevant professional organizations and continued education in oncology nutrition.  Registered Dietician (RD) or RD-eligible with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.   Licensed with the State of Tennessee required.  At least 2 years of experience in clinical nutrition, with a focus on oncology preferred.  Strong organizational and time-management skills.
