Bone Densitometry Technician
Job Description
SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of a physician, the Bone Densitometry Technician (Dexa Scan Tech) is responsible for performing bone densitometry x-ray scans for interpretation by, or at the request of a licensed practitioner, while being friendly, courteous, and empathetic to the patient and all parties involved with and in their care. The candidate in this position will also be required to assist with referrals, authorizations and other duties during down time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Performs bone density scans
- Coordinates patient clinical history with procedure, documents information, provides instructions to patient during treatment.
- Positions, immobilizes, and determines accurate technique exposure for patient during examination.
- Follows manufacturer protocol for operation of densitometry equipment to assure safe environment for procedures. Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
- Assumes responsibility of physical and psychological needs of patients during scanning.
- Assists in maintaining records and patients chart by documenting patients treatment and response, respecting confidentiality and established policy.
- Responsible for maintaining equipment and reports machinery malfunction.
- Gives input for equipment purchase and supply decisions.
- Participates in department’s quality assessment and improvement plan.
- Assists in promotion and marketing of the bone densitometry program.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Certification/Licensure as required by the State of Tennessee. 2 years experience performing Dexa Scans in a medical clinic setting. Experience with obtaining referrals and authorizations a plus.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with faculty members, students, residents, staff, patients, and other third parties. Ability to operate computers, keyboards, and printers. Ability to concentrate under high demands and listen effectively. Must possess good judgment and problem solving skills. Ability to organize tasks, work as a team member and/or independently using sound patient care skills with a variety of professional disciplines. Convey a professional and positive image and attitude.
